S.O.S. for HQX? Monday, January 7, 2008
Yesterday's Daily World contained a front-page article regarding downtown Hoquiam's dismal local business performance. Let's sum up. Hoquiam's longsuffering downtown businesses: "Gee, we sure hope someone does something." Mayor: "We're going to be doing lots of stuff. I mean we're really going to help out. Yeah." (and you've been doing .... what exactly, in these recent not-so-"thriving Metropolis" years?). Locals: curiously silent, as they're shopping and frequenting out of town. An associated article on the same day summarized results for the City's recent $80,000 payout to a consultant to help develop an "Economic Development Action Plan" (the terms "action plan" are, in my limited corporate experiene, usually uttered most often by those that get the least done).

So now that we know we have a problem, and we have expert action ideas, let's get started, Hoquiam! In the next Sure Fire & Nail: 10 Things You Can Do for D/t HQX!

Onto even more domestic, small-minded, and tiny printing minutiae: weirdly, I somehow found the envelopes I was looking for in affordable quantities. Turns out those Google ads are pretty smart if you ask me. My secret desire is to have some colored fun ones - however, they are not at my 100% post-consumer recycle.

a shopping i will go - hopefully Friday, November 30, 2007
Yesterday a lovely donation from Beth B. put my zine in the black, with a positive balance of about $35 (some of it in Paypal) - not including the monies I am setting aside for donation to a local charity or worthy cause.* Here is what I am hoping to acquire before the next printing (January):

1. A printer, so I can make copies on my own (which also will help immensely with proofreading; proofreading a document on the computer is not nearly as effective although of course I do that as well). Ralph has a Dell 1720 he's recommending based on his experience in corporate life servicing one and a relatively low toner replacement charge. He tells me this will cost about $150 and the cartridge will last us four full printings at 200 sets each printing (I am nowhere near accomplishing 200 sets with this first issue).

2. A business licence. I think will cost between $35 to $50. I have a contact I will be calling Monday for help with this.

3. Envelopes! I am down to just a few. I'd like booklet-style 6 by 9's, on 100% post-consumer recycle if possible (this is starting to look not possible). Depending on who I go with, this is about $13 to $75. I'm not sure what I'll be doing for envelopes in the intirim.

4. 100% post-consumer paper for printing - which I may be able to get donated by Grays Harbor Paper, LP. I'm going to think positively and decide this will cost me $0.

5. Postage. I have a balance of six mailings. I send free mailings to any contributors or those in my "Thank You". Anyone else wanting a mailing has a suggested donation of $4 applied which covers S&H. I would be happy with 20 mailings (stamps) paid for - about $12 per issue.

I am not all gimmie gimmie, though! Based on my donations *I have $11.30 to donate to a charity or worthy cause. I have considered a few places for this money but I think I'm getting an idea.

mostly subsist on caffeine anyway Tuesday, November 20, 2007
I have received a lot of positive feedback on the zine in the last 24 hours (OK, the first messages I got were, "your link doesn't work", "you should stop writing so much", "please put my email address in the Bcc field next time". But finally a few people started saying "Congratulations!" / "I'm proud of you" and then later in the day, "I loved it! I f@#$ing loved it!" - all of which pleased me and soothed my spirit. I forgot about the fact that, when you work really hard on something, human nature leads one to expect some kind of acknowledgment for the work. I'm going to have to work on my humility.

Today my husband sends me the link to this family's blog where I find, amongst a lot of interesting information, a link to a pledge to stop drinking bottled water and commit to tap. This pledge is particularly easy for me to commit to as our tap water here is excellent. I like the concept, though, and so I signed the pledge.

grays = green Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Well, I'm not the only person noticing the pro-environment revitalization of my burg. Grays Harbor's eco-friendly moves and the young professional exodus back to the area is featured on KUOW this week.
